3 strategies to revive lust for your career by Julia Firestone.

Lust isn’t a word we use often when talking about work…

For good reason 😜

But my clients are often surprised that many requests and challenges I give them (the joyful “homework” of coaching), revolve around pleasure.

Let me explain what I mean by that…

Remember when you were a kid and created an imaginary game with a friend? You’d create different roles, imagine a fantasy world around you, and immerse yourself in performance and a part of yourself that brought out curiosity and possibility.

Whether you were playing a family, a teacher, or a group of ferocious or silly animals, there was something truly magical about that world you co-created.

Now, think about what level from 1-10 (with 10 being the highest) you would say you feel that magic in your day-to-day work?

In other words, is it chock full of imagination, play, curiosity, creativity, and possibilities that allow you to unfurl, stretch in new joyful ways and have fun?

Or is it dry as hell like a saltine cracker at snack time?

Maybe you’re thinking, “I GET IT MY JOB SUCKS” and you’re in the process of leaving. In which case, how will you ensure that your next role provides more of those fabulous ingredients?

Or, if you’re not trying to leave, but you’re also not especially loving your work, you might be remembering that feeling and wondering how to bring it back into your career.

Here are 3 strategies to revive lust for your career - whether you’re staying or going!

1. Pick something that scares you in a good way and try it on.

Ask for accountability from a friend or colleague and commit to a timeline. Whether it’s writing your romance novel, trying out standup comedy, or taking a flying trapeze class, let your passion guide the way.

2. Create a 5-minutes-per-day pleasure practice.

Start by setting a 5-minute timer for yourself. In that time, brainstorm all the many different things you loved doing as a kid that felt creative and fun. There are no wrong answers - riding a bike, drawing, playing piano, getting messy in dirt, writing fantasy stories, recording yourself singing over popular songs on the radio (ok too specific?).

Then, look over that list and pick just 1-2 that really bring you joy to think about. Start super small and pick a time that works for you every day - like just after lunch, transitioning out of work or first thing in the morning.

Make it a priority to honor your pleasure by practicing those 1 or 2 activities at that time, starting with 1 week to see how it feels. And there’s no need to go through a huge setup - do the practice with whatever materials you have easily accessible, or pick one that you can do with little effort.

Watch the magic unfold as you make it a daily habit and share it with your colleagues to see how it lights them up too!

3. Position yourself as a leader.

Do you feel like you’re spinning your wheels in a mid-level job and struggling to level up?

If so, you might be feeling a bit down on yourself and thinking from the perspective of “how can I climb out from below.” But what if instead, you thought from the perspective of where you want to go?

If I were a Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for example, how would I gather people towards a common goal? How would I share my insights with different audiences? What kind of impact would I be looking to create at this point in my career? Unlock trust in yourself and where you’re going by changing your view.

You can even create a special superhero identity of yourself who is already in that amazing role and step into their perspective when you need a boost!
